Wow! This is powerful and inspiring. We are too often afraid of silence, nervous to be alone with ourselves or wait for clarity of thought. Soaked constantly with ads, opinions, sounds, videos, and other people’s views, we’re like bloated sponges that need to be washed clean and dried in fresh air and sunshine. A healthy mind is at the core of living a happy life. But who has time for silence? To wait for the quiet inner voice? To be mentally washed? When Children are disciplined, they are given ‘time out’ and ‘quiet time.’ Adults need quiet time too.
Spot on, Jed and Mr. Merton. Powerful reminders of the importance of silence. Silence is my teacher, therapist, and friend. I strive to protect it every day. I love Merton’s beautiful words at the end of that quote. Be your own sun!
Something sacred about silence and stillness while the abundance of commotion is constantly circulating. The impact of being impeccable with our words is immeasurable. Which also extends to being diligent with what we let enter our minds.
Well, here I am responding to your thoughts which seems ironic, BUT, I found myself nodding to your words because I often ride in silence in my car. I love it. As you describe it lets my mind do the talking and wandering. It's why I love walking in the early morning, no cars, the only sounds are the world waking up -- wind through trees, birds singing their songs reorienting themselves in the world and to each other. A wonderful thing it is to be open to less distraction and noise. I love it so much. xo. Thanks Jed, as always, you're the one writer I read whose words drop me into a special zone, a heart and soul zone. That's a wonderful place too.
