Why Conservative Christianity’s Fight Against Homosexuality Will Fail
Chip and Joanna Gaines had a sweet gay couple with twins on their show. The conservative Christian right is verrrrrry upset. Because this house-renovation show allowed a gay couple to be normalized.
The same people who think God put Donald Trump (the most unChristian president we’ve ever had by any metric) in office to protect them.
They fear this loving family will normalize gay love.
They do not fear electing Donald Trump to the Presidency will normalize misogyny, cruelty, infidelity, opportunistic fake professing of faith, and greed.
Oh, I’m mad today.
Let me tell you why the conservative Christian fight against homosexuality will fail. Because what is real and good cannot be buried by lies. I keep returning to Jesus’ words in Matthew: ‘15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.”
The good fruit is love, is beautiful people with beautiful families and beautiful love. Is a soul not at war with itself. Is ‘life and life abundant.’
The thorns and thistles of repressed sexuality, of suicidality, of self-hatred. The thorns of closeted gay men so afraid of being wrong that they become pastors, and the poison of their own lie metastasizes, drives them mad, and leads them to become child abusers. Time and time again we see this.
The truth of the universe doesn’t care about propaganda. You can believe the earth is flat, and physics will eventually prove you wrong. You can believe you will fly if you jump off the roof, and physics will prove you wrong.
You can believe homosexuality is a sin. And your daughter will be gay. And she will love you. And thrive in her life. And pour heaping coals on your head.
The seed of conservative Christianity’s failure on this is planted in their own families. One in ten people is gay. Someone in your family is gay. That little seed planted by God as an invitation to truth.
To my fellow gay kids and adults, there’s a good chance you grew up in a Christian home. Love your families. Love them so well that they see the good fruit of your life, and the poison they’re clutching in theirs. We are their best chance at freedom from a rotten belief smuggled into a beautiful theology.
"Love your families. Love them so well that they see the good fruit of your life" It's such a strong concept (and so hard to do) that loving somebody despite of how they treat or view you. But I agree, it's how real change actually comes about❤️
